Special thanks to Credit Union of Texas for their generous support of the STARS program.

Richardson ISD has announced its ten 2008-2009 STARS (Superior Teaching Achievements in RISD) teachers of the year via surprise classroom visits on Monday.

RISD Excellence in Education Foundation, the district’s non-profit foundation working directly for all RISD students and staff, once again administered the selection and recognition of this year’s STARS teachers. Students and colleagues cheered as the teachers were surprised at their schools with flowers, balloons and an oversized mock check for $1,000.

Richardson High School Teacher Named an HEB State Finalist
RHS Physics teacher and former RISD STARS winner Dr. George Hademenos was named this week as a state finalist in the HEB Excellence in Education Awards Program.

“Dr. H” was named in the Rising Star Category, which honors exceptionally promising teachers with less than 10 years of experience. As a finalist, he was awarded a check for $1,000 during a surprise visit to his classroom and RHS will receive another $1,000.

He will now compete with other finalists around Texas to be named a Grand Prize winner in his category in May in Austin.

The HEB Excellence in Education Award program is the largest and most prestigious program of its kind in Texas, and seeks to spotlight best practices and celebrate the work of our state’s educators.

Parkhill Teacher's Grant to Create Literacy Library combines passions
Being able to write well pays off. Just ask Parkhill Junior High English teacher Abbey Rosenbaum, also a certified Abydos Learning International trainer. Because of a heartfelt letter she wrote while applying for the annual Abydos Reese/Corder Grant, she now has $1000 to start a Literacy Library at the Texas Mentor Network. With 400 colleagues applauding, a dozen of whom were fellow Parkhill teachers, including her principal Judy Marcum, she received her grant during the annual Abydos Conference last month.

With the desire to better serve her students and because RISD is a training district, Abbey was able to apply and begin Abydos training three years ago. Abydos is a project that began in New Jersey in 1977. Now headquartered in Spring Texas and servicing districts throughout the state, training focuses on staying true to the basics of writing and reading as processes, and emphasizes that writing can be taught in a systematic hands-on way and use authentic strategies and authentic student writing. The philosophy is making a positive difference on the TAKS throughout Texas.

Abbey studied for nine months, reading research books, writing lesson plans, and learning different ways of bringing working ideas into the classroom. As a Certified Trainer now also able to train other teachers, Abbey says of Abydos, "This is not a program because programs try to fix something. It's a philosophy of teaching, a whole way of teaching kids to write. We don't give them worksheets to do but instead focus on brain development and actual classroom teaching."

RHS Iron Chefs
Richardson High School culinary students Faith Glennie and Mollie Guerra recently won first place in an Iron-Chef-style cooking competition sponsored by the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association. The First Annual GDRA FSPrep (Foodservice Preparation) Culinary Challenge was held in Frisco, and teams of two were presented with a batch of ingredients and two hours to create an entrée, vegetable, starch, salad, and dessert. Students did not know in advance what ingredients they’d have to work with, and could not use recipes. They were judged by professional chefs on knife skills, chicken fabrication, vegetable cookery, starch cookery, presentation, sanitation and organization.

Because of their win, Faith and Mollie were invited to appear this week on Channel 4’s Good Day show, where they prepared a cheese & egg gourmet strata.

Congratulations to these aspiring chefs and their exceptional instructor, Karen Hill.

Feeding Families Forever
Over the past 14 years, the J.J. Pearce Student Council has orchestrated annual community-wide service projects. Each year their drives run for a few weeks in the middle of the winter, but planning begins long before. Following much research, this year’s student council chose to work with Heifer International and began making preparations in May of 2008.

Heifer International is an organization that uses donations to purchase animals for needy families in other countries as well as in parts of the U.S. They also train the recipients how to care for the animal and ask that they pass on the gift. For example, a cow purchased for a family in Romania will give 7 gallons of milk a day and will produce a calf each year. A flock of chicks will give eggs each day to be eaten or sold and honey produced from a hive of bees can change an entire village, giving them money for clothes and education.

The Student Council officers began by naming their project “Feeding Families Forever” with a goal of collecting an "Ark of Animals." The officers then created informational flyers and disseminated them to the entire Pearce community, including six feeder elementary schools and several local businesses.

Student council representatives engaged each fourth-period class at Pearce to support this worthy effort, and officers enlisted support from Bukhair Elementary sixth-graders to create motivational artwork. Officers then arranged a fundraising competition among classes, and also among PHS’s six feeder elementary schools (won by Bukhair).

In all, more than $20,0000 was raised and presented to Heifer International last month, four times the initial goal.

The entire Pearce community enjoyed working on this project and was delighted to support such an exceptional cause. >Top
