North principal Melissa Gassman and "Great" nurse Valerie King.
Sherry Freeland, the school nurse at Spring Valley Elementary, made a trip to Austin last week to receive the "Outstanding Award" in the Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health Program. The Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health Program recognize and promote effective school health programs and initiatives that strive to continually improve the lifelong health of students, staff and the greater school community.
Sherry developed the Super Stars Fitness Program at SVE, now in its fourth successful year. It was created as a proactive way of educating students and parents about Type 2 Diabetes and how a healthy lifestyle can help prevent this disease. Sherry says that, "this program is successful because it focuses on the parent-child team practicing successful diet and exercise strategies together.”
In addition, North Junior High nurse Valerie King was recently named to the prestigious "Great 100 Nurses" list for the metroplex. It is rare for a school nurse to earn this recognition competing with the bedside nurses in the area's outstanding healthcare facilities.
Congratulations Sherry and Valerie! >Top |

From comic strip to stage, Charles Schultz’s beloved Peanuts characters come to life in an inspiring musical that celebrates the ups and downs of childhood. Charlie Brown, perhaps the most enduring “everyman” of our time, leads us through life’s lessons with spark, openness and candor. You're a Good Man Charlie Brown creates a nostalgic air as the story unfolds of an average day in the life of this famous comic strip child hero.
Many trials and tribulations ensue as we see Charlie struggle with his need to be a “Good Man”. Take a trip to the Berkner Theatre as we pave the way for your stroll down memory lane.
