Usually when Richardson High school Varsity Tennis Captain Stephen Katrein and J.J. Pearce Varsity Captain Jeffrey Stulmaker meet on the tennis court, they are adversaries.
Not any more. The pair who played doubles together for The United States Tennis Association Sanctioned Qualifiers came together for a huge win in the Boys 18's Doubles Draw for the 2008 Cotton Bowl Super Championship Major Zone.
Katrein, who is ranked 39th in Texas and 46th in the Gulf States, and Stulmaker who is 88th in Texas and 112th in the Gulf states, are also an unusual duo for another reason. They are both lefties. The pair beat the number one seeded team from Austin in the first round. They went on to win the finals over a mixed Ohio/Texas team.
Katrein, a senior, and Stulmaker, a junior, put friendship aside when it comes to district tennis. "We each want to win for our schools," they say. They will have the opportunity to battle it out when the Spring Tennis Season begins this month. >Top |
