In January 2006, RISD launched Inside RISD, a year-long program designed to allow community members to go behind the scenes for an in-depth look at Richardson Independent School District. Monthly early morning sessions focus on specific areas of district operations, from crayons to college, from the classroom to the bus barn, and from buildings to balance sheets. Each year principals may name an emerging leader from their community for inclusion on the guest list. It is hoped that the annual program will attract those individuals who will be future members of district committees and teams, those who can help make a difference in the school community as opinion leaders. Those who joined the classes are being informed and entertained in adult-style learning sessions with lots of tours, games, and discussions. So far, this year, the class of 2007 has participated in the following sessions: Thursday, January 25, 2007 The 2007 Class of Inside RISD met for the first time January 25. Class members heard from new RISD Superintendent David Simmons, had an authentic Class members learned about RWJH's AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, the magnet program offerings and were able to ask questions of students and staff. Friday, February 16, 2007 For their February session, the class met at the district’s 93-year old Administration Building, to learn about the day’s topics of administration and governance. Class members sat in on a session of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council – a weekly meeting where RISD’s most senior administrators stay apprised of what’s happening around the district. They heard about a new junior high reading program being piloted next year, and a summary of the new Career and Technology Education programs being implemented at all four district high schools. Afterwards, the class moved to the auditorium, to attend a special meeting of RISD’s elected Board of Trustees. Board members explained how a typical meeting is conducted, and the requirements and traditions that are observed. Members heard a budget presentation from Assistant Superintendent Tony Harkleroad, and also listened as members of the community used the forum to share thoughts with the trustees. The morning concluded with the Board voting unanimously to invite members of the class to the district’s 2007 Superintendent’s Convocation that traditionally kicks off the new school year. The day began a student string trio playing during breakfast, followed by a panel discussion with fine arts students, who explained the positive impact that fine arts has had on their academics and in their overall development. Next the group went to the auditorium to watch a scene rehearsal of LHHS's One Act Play, which is a UIL drama competition. Following a brief stop at the Black Box Theatre, members enjoyed both band & choir performances while learning about how fine arts is structured and supported in RISD. The morning concluded in the back in the library, where student artwork was displayed. The class is scheduled to meet at 7:30 am at MST Magnet to learn about elementary-level curriculum & instruction, professional development & technology. Thursday, May 17, 2007 The class is scheduled to meet at 7:30 am at Richardson High School to learn about secondary-level curriculum & instruction, career & technology education and professional development.
